The Seven Churches: Revelation 2 and 3

The book of Revelation was written by the disciple of Jesus, popularly called the disciple whom Jesus loved, of the 12 he was the only one who died naturally. In chapter one Jesus introduced Himself and laid the foundation for what was to come verses 11-20.

Apostle John started the book of Revelation with a message of the Lord Jesus to seven churches that existed those days, to commend and rebuke them of their works and to warn them of things that might happen to them if they do not repent.

We might say that this message was solely intended to those churches at the time of John’s vision on the Island of Patmos and that it has nothing to do with us today in our modern Christianity. But if we all agree that the vision about the state of the church and what will happen to them in the future, then as Christian, we can use these churches as a yardstick to see where we stand in the Lord.

We learnt that every church has an angel. When the word of God says Angel it refers to two different people, supernatural beings from heaven and the pastor or leader of a group of Christians. In Revelation, Jesus was speaking to His church leaders and the church as a whole, obviously He will not tell an angel l know your works, your labour and patience. This was to His people and we realise that these warnings are in no way different from what God is giving to the church today.
